Livid Travis Kelce bumps, screams at Andy Reid to keep him on field after Chiefs’ Super Bowl fumble
Travis Kelce’s emotions bubbled over during the second quarter of Super Bowl 2024.
After Patrick Mahomes completed a long pass play to Mecole Hardman into the red zone, Chiefs coach Andy Reid pulled star tight end Travis Kelce off the field and called for a run play for Isiah Pacheco.
Pacheco fumbled, the Niners recovered and Kelce went apoplectic.
He could be seen screaming on the sidelines at Reid as he bumped into the coach and yelled at him to not take him out of the game.
CBS Sports sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson added that Kelce threw his helmet as he came off the field, just as he did during an outburst, during the Chiefs’ Christmas game against the Raiders.
Kelce later went up to Reid and hugged him, according to The Athletic, with Reid patting the tight end on the back.
Kelce, 34, has been held to just one catch for 1 yard in the first half of the Super Bowl, and has not been targeted on any other passes as of halftime.
This is a very unexpectedly low level of production for Kelce so far in the game, as sports business reporter Darren Rovell noted that his full-game over/under total was 69.5 receiving yards — and that 91 percent of the bets at BetMGM were on the over.
Kelce had been said to have given a particularly motivational speech to his Chiefs teammates on Saturday night.
“I was told also that Travis Kelce hit it out of the park,” Wolfson relayed earlier Sunday, before the game began. “His speech was powerful, it was impactful. There was not a dry eye in the house and that this team is absolutely ready to go.”
