Wheelchair-bound ex-con charged in sleeping bag murder begged cops to see dog one last time: court docs
The wheelchair-bound ex-con charged with murdering a Manhattan woman — then dumping her body in the trash — begged cops to see his puppy before he was hauled off into custody, according to new court papers.
Chad Irish, 55, seemed more concerned about the fate of his dog, Butter, than the allegations against him when cops questioned him July 8 in the murder of Yazmeen Williams, 31.
In separate rants, Irish denied shooting Williams — and kept asking police officers about the pooch, even worrying about whether they were going to take Butter away, court papers said.
“I live here just me and my dog,” Irish alleged told one police officer, according to new information revealed as the disabled maniac pleaded not guilty to murder charges Monday in Manhattan Supreme Court.
He then pleaded with cops to say goodbye to his puppy, who he said is about 10 months old.
“I want to lock my door,” Irish then said, according to the court papers. “I want to say bye to my dog real quick.”
Irish was then attacked by dozens of neighbors after questioning when he was taken out on a stretcher outside NYCHA’s Straus Houses on East 28th Street, according to video.
The shocking caught-on-camera mayhem appears to show one man landing at least one punch as others tried getting in their own shots.
At one point during his statements, Irish claimed that a neighbor had sprayed Mace in his face and that he feared for his “safety” being taken out on a stretcher because his neighbors “might try to hurt” him, court papers show.
During his court appearance, Irish went on an incoherent tangent directed at both Judge Curtis Farber and his attorney Michelle Benoit, who Irish claims wouldn’t let him testify in front of a grand jury.
“They are in cahoots!” Irish yelled from his wheelchair, before demanding a new attorney. “Don’t you want to hear what happened? Don’t you want to hear my side?”
Manhattan prosecutors claim that Irish — an ex-con with a lengthy rap sheet — allegedly shot Williams in the head before he dumped her body on Third Avenue near East 27th Street on July 6. Prosecutors said he threatened Williams five days before he blasted her in the back of the head inside the Kips Bay apartment.
Shocking surveillance video obtained by The Post appears to show Irish pulling a blue sleeping bag on a dolly, dragging his victim’s remains while riding along in a motorized wheelchair.
Irish then left the sleeping bag among several black trash bags for curbside garbage pickup, which cops said they smelled a foul odor emitting from the pile with Williams’ body stuffed inside.
He allegedly foreshadowed the killing to his victim, who he had lived with since November, just days before the grisly killing when they had been arguing over text messages, prosecutors said.
He was also accused of threatening to shoot another person on July 8 — which he denied along with killing Williams, a Buffalo State University graduate who was set to start a job with the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
“I’m a 55-year-old in a wheelchair. I never did nothing to no girl or nothing,” Irish said, according to court papers. “This guy here is lying. I never had no gun, I don’t have no weapons.”
Irish faces second-degree murder, concealment of a human corpse and other charges.
“As alleged, Chad Irish cut the life of Yazmeen Williams short in this unspeakable tragedy, compounding the crime by so callously disposing of her body. Ms. Williams had her whole life ahead of her and was looking forward to starting a new chapter with a job at the New York City Housing and Preservation and Development that week,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement. “I send my deepest condolences to her loved ones as they continue to mourn her loss.”
Irish is set to return to court on August 14.
