Breakdance star Raygun returns to Australia as a national celebrity

In news we didn’t know we needed, Rachael “Raygun” Gunn has returned to Sydney’s inner west in impossibly baggy pants.

The 37-year-old was photographed doing what any self-respecting hipster does on a Thursday: grabbing coffee at a local joint.

She wore a crisp white T-shirt, a slightly oversized jacket, and jeans so baggy they could only be described as ballooning.

To be fair, breakdancers probably need a lot of legroom in case they want to pop a move outside the Ashfield Aquatic Centre.

Since failing to place in the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Olympian has had a wild time, this week being ranked the number one breakdancer in the world.

It all started when she turned up to compete in a matching tracksuit and hit the floor with gusto.

She broke out the kind of moves that are usually reserved for a wedding dancefloor after Uncle Craig has hit the champagne a little too hard and your aunty has gone home.

She did the sprinkler, mimicked a snake, and went full kangaroo – because she was there to represent Australia.

Tragically, Raygun’s version of busting a move didn’t end with her placing, winning, or getting a gold medal, but it did make her go incredibly viral.

Some people thought her performance was iconic; others thought she shouldn’t have qualified in the first place.

Pretty quickly, her performance became controversial.

The breakdancer didn’t just go viral in Australia; she hit the American scene hard.

Songstress Adele cracked a joke about her, and Jimmy Kimmel discussed her controversial performance on his US talk show.

In the aftermath, Raygun laid low, stayed off social media, and then did what every Aussie celebrity does: waited it out and then headed onto 10’s The Project.

She sat down for an interview with Waleed Aly and explained that she had seen some of the backlash coming.

“As soon as I qualified, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, what have I done?’ Because I knew that I was going to get beaten, and I knew that people were not going to understand my style and what I was going to do,” she said.

She said that it hadn’t been all bad feedback, and some pretty impressive people had reached out.

“The upside is you get random people contacting you that you never thought would ever notice you,” she said.

Raygun then shared that Sir Richard Branson, the co-founder of Virgin Airlines, had reached out.

“It’s someone like Sir Richard Branson calling you to say that he enjoyed your performance and thought that it was ‘plucky’ and ‘courageous’ and ‘fun,” Gunn explained. Media-Mode / SplashNews.com

She also said he’d asked if she’d wanted to set sail on the high seas with Boy George, of all people.

“It’s someone like Sir Richard Branson calling you to say that he enjoyed your performance and thought that it was ‘plucky’ and ‘courageous’ and ‘fun,” she explained.

Raygun went viral for her widely-panned performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“And he would love to do something with me and have me on some cruises with Boy George. Like, what is life? I don’t know,” she said.

What is life?

Well, it certainly is random.

A few days after that, a photo posted on Instagram went viral of Raygun having dinner out with Boy George.

She looked casual, and he was wearing one of his little hats. The caption was “Break the internet.”

Raygun’s certainly done that, and now she’s attempting to conquer pulling off giant pants and she just might have done it.
