See Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, 67, make his shocking return to acting 7 years after retiring
The legend is back.
Daniel Day-Lewis was seen filming a movie seven years after he retired from acting.
The Oscar winner, 67, was photographed on the set of the film “Anemone” in Manchester, England, on Sunday, Sept. 29.
He rode on a motorcycle with Sean Bean, the star of the film, in front of a huge group of crew members.
Day-Lewis had on a heavy khaki jacket, glasses and white helmet.
The Post has reached out to Day-Lewis’ rep for comment.
“Anemone” is the directorial debut of Day-Lewis’ son, Roman Day-Lewis, according to Variety.
The film, which Daniel and Roman wrote together, is “an exploration of the intricate relationships between fathers, sons and brothers” and the “dynamics of familial bonds,” according to the outlet. Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley and Safia Oakley-Green will also star.
Day-Lewis has not been in a movie since 2017’s “Phantom Thread.” He starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s period drama opposite Lesley Manville, Vicky Krieps and Camilla Rutherford.
The film garnered Day-Lewis a nomination for Best Actor at the 90th Academy Awards.
Just before that movie was released, the “Lincoln” actor’s rep Leslee Dart released a statement regarding Day-Lewis stepping away from show business.
“Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years,” Dart said in June 2017. “This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”
The “Gangs of New York” star later admitted he wasn’t sure why he was retiring from acting, stating to W magazine in November 2017: “I haven’t figured it out. But it’s settled on me, and it’s just there.”
“I did want to draw a line. I didn’t want to get sucked back into another project,” he shared. “All my life, I’ve mouthed off about how I should stop acting, and I don’t know why it was different this time, but the impulse to quit took root in me, and that became a compulsion. It was something I had to do.”
The actor added of his retirement decision, “I have great sadness. And that’s the right way to feel. How strange would it be if this was just a gleeful step into a brand-new life. I’ve been interested in acting since I was 12 years old, and back then, everything other than the theater— that box of light — was cast in shadow.”
“When I began, it was a question of salvation. Now, I want to explore the world in a different way.”
Day-Lewis has rarely been seen since the retirement news. He was pictured for the first time in years as he ran errands in New York City in May 2023. He was seen again days later on a walk with his wife, director Rebecca Miller, 62.
The following month, cameras caught Day-Lewis using crutches to exit a building in NYC.
