The 12 best spray sunscreens I tested for protection and a nice glow

Let’s be real — when it’s sweltering hot outside and there’s a pool or ocean nearby, chances are you want to run into the water and take a dip.

But, it’s surely a good idea to apply a quality sunscreen for both your face and body. While it’s recommended to apply SPF thoroughly (and reapplying, specifically every two hours), a quality spray sunscreen typically offers full-coverage protection in record time — so long as you apply it correctly.

“Spray sunscreen works in the same way as a lotion or applicator sunscreen,” Kristen Miller, MD, board-certified dermatologist and a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, told Post Wanted. “There is no difference in formulation or ingredients between the different types; the only difference is how it is delivered to the skin. Spray sunscreen is applied through a nozzle in a mist form.”

I’ve been spritzing and spraying sunscreen for more than four years, but I completely refreshed this guide to include more expertise from even more dermatologists (I’m fascinated by the science of skincare, what can I say) and even brought in a UV reader to the mix to *really* assess if spray sunscreens work to how they’re marketed. But, more on that in my testing process outlined toward the end of this guide.

Best Overall for Most People: EltaMD UV AOX Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 40 Sunscreen Mist

EltaMD UV AOX Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 40 Sunscreen Mist
Amazon

Pros:

  • Exceeds dermatologist-recommended SPF 30 count
  • Fragrance-free and impeccable for sensitive skin, specifically
  • Features a 360-degree spray nozzle, ensuring it’s great for hard-to-reach places

Cons:

  • Price point may be unreachable for some
  • Not as water-resistant compared to some other spray sunscreens tested (40 minutes, as opposed to the average of 80)

The EltaMD UV AOX Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 40 Sunscreen Mist stands out as the best spray sunscreen for most people due to its exceptional combination of broad-spectrum protection and skincare benefits. Offering SPF 40, it provides reliable defense against both UVA and UVB rays, which is critical for protecting skin from harmful sun exposure and helping to prevent premature aging. The mist itself makes the sunscreen incredibly convenient for reapplication throughout the day, especially for those with busy lifestyles or on-the-go routines. From the brand that debuted its best-selling face sunscreen, I knew this was going to be a surefire winner.

What truly sets this sunscreen apart is its inclusion of antioxidants, such as vitamin C, aloe and coconut, which help neutralize free radicals caused by sun exposure and environmental pollutants. These antioxidants not only protect the skin from sun damage but also enhance the skin’s overall health, in tandem with its 14% zinc oxide count to act as the best mineral sunscreen spray.

Another reason why EltaMD UV AOX Mist is ideal for most people is its gentle, non-irritating formulation. Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, the mist is free of parabens, fragrances and other harsh chemicals that can cause irritation (a major plus for my sensitive skin). Uniquely, its 360-degree spray nozzle allows it to protect in hard-to-reach places so you can apply without a second thought. It doesn’t leave a white cast, either, and instantly turns clear.

Best Drugstore: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 70 Spray Sunscreen

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 70 Spray Sunscreen
Amazon

Pros:

  • Exceeds dermatologist-recommended SPF 30 count
  • Weightless feel when sprayed on the skin
  • Fast-absorbing

Cons:

  • Somewhat difficult to apply evenly as its spray is ultra-lightweight, so be sure to spray with extra care

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 70 Spray Sunscreen stands out as the best drugstore spray sunscreen due to its high level of protection and lightweight formula. With an impressive SPF 70, it offers broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays, shielding the skin from harmful sun exposure and reducing the risk of sunburn and premature aging. The spray is formulated with Helioplex technology and, in layman’s terms, helps deliver long-lasting protection that won’t wear off easily. So, it’s great for long days in the sunshine.

A household name, this Neutrogena spray sunscreen boasts an ultra-lightweight and non-greasy texture. It absorbs quickly into my skin without leaving a sticky residue, so it’s one of the trusty ones I’ll always bring with me. Because it’s so lightweight, you’ll want to apply this sunscreen spray with extra care to protect hard-to-reach areas like the backside of your arm and parts of your legs. The dry-touch finish makes it a great option for people who dislike the heavy, oily feel of traditional lotions and creams as well.

The below button includes three of the Neutrogena spray sunscreens.

Best Scent-Free: Eucerin Advanced Hydration + Hyaluronic Acid & Humectants Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Spray Sunscreen

Eucerin Advanced Hydration + Hyaluronic Acid & Humectants Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Spray Sunscreen
Amazon

Pros:

  • Exceeds dermatologist-recommended SPF 30 count
  • Contains hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin, making it especially great for dry skin
  • Packed with antioxidants to help with anti-aging, including vitamin C
  • Excellent value for the price as it contains 6 ounces instead of the average of 5 ounces

Cons:

  • Spray nozzle could be more ergonomic, but not a dealbreaker

The Eucerin Advanced Hydration + Hyaluronic Acid & Humectants Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Spray Sunscreen is an excellent spray sunscreen, particularly for those with sensitive skin like me, or those who prefer a scent-free option. It’s inclusion of hyaluronic acid and humectants make it equally as beneficial for dull, dry skin — so you best believe it’s always with me.

Its ingredients work together to lock in moisture and keep my skin hydrated throughout the day. I especially love how it applies clear and doesn’t have a greasy feel. It always absorbs quickly and it’s truly one of the best on this list. It offers efficacious protection while remaining scent-free, which is its shining standout quality.

What’s more, it’s water-resistant for up to 80 minutes and simply checks off plenty of boxes for what a good spray sunscreen should be: void of fragrance, budget-friendly, long-lasting (but, you should still reapply every 2 hours) and hydrating.

Best Over-Makeup: e.l.f. SKIN Suntouchable All Set for Sun Broad Spectrum SPF 45 Sun Protection + Setting Spray

e.l.f. SKIN Suntouchable All Set for Sun Broad Spectrum SPF 45 Sun Protection + Setting Spray
Amazon

Pros:

  • Exceeds dermatologist-recommended SPF 30 count
  • Doubles as a setting spray, so it’s one of the only formulas on the market that’s safe to be sprayed on the face
  • Excellent size for traveling, as it’s a sunscreen setting spray

Cons:

  • Not the most versatile product for spraying on your body

If there’s a brand that knows how to whip out skin-loving formulas on a budget, it’s e.l.f Cosmetics. Take it from me — I reviewed the near-entirety of the brand and am, quite possibly, its biggest fan.

The e.l.f. SKIN Suntouchable All Set for Sun Broad Spectrum SPF 45 Sun Protection + Setting Spray is the best spray sunscreen to wear over makeup for its versatile, lightweight formula. It’s incredibly lightweight and provides an almost invisible layer of sun protection. It’s designed to be sprayed directly over makeup without disturbing or breaking it down (think: your best setting spray, but with SPF), making it a perfect option for daily sun protection without compromising the finish of your foundation or other products. It love how it doubles as a refreshing mist — a mist I know will always offer me that bonus of sun protection.

Its noncomedogenic formula means it never clogs my pores which is *critical* especially as someone who consistently notices large pores on the apples of my cheeks. It’s also designed to be gentle on all skin types, including my sensitive and (hormonal) acne-prone skin. It’s also an excellent travel-size sunscreen spray that I love keeping with me at all times.

This is the best sunscreen spray for your face because of its well-thought-out formulation, but you are not supposed to apply the majority of spray sunscreens onto your face. This one functions more as a setting spray and a mist but you should use a face sunscreen 99% of the time, unless you opt for this product.

Best Water-Resistant: Vacation Classic Spray Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen

Vacation Classic Spray Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen
Vacation

Pros:

  • Contains dermatologist-recommended SPF 30 count
  • Luxurious, pleasing scent
  • Evenly sprays onto the skin
  • Excellent value for the price as it contains 6 ounces instead of the average of 5 ounces

Cons:

  • Contains chemical filters (not mineral), so it may not be everyone’s preference; transparently, it’s not reef-safe

Get ready to be transported to the tropics. The Vacation Classic Spray Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen is often hailed as one of the best spray sunscreens due to its exceptional water-resistance — but that’s not all. The entire aesthetic of the brand is giving “50s-retro beach trip,” which just makes the application experience a bit more luxurious. However, it’s effective at protecting from sunburns and evenly sprays onto the skin.

Whether you’re swimming, sweating or enjoying a day at the beach, the formulation adheres to the skin more effectively. Whenever I use it, I enjoy its beyond-pleasing scent and how it creates a durable barrier that won’t wash off easily.

What makes the Vacation Classic Spray particularly effective in water-resistance is its unique blend of high-quality ingredients, ones that are specifically chosen for their ability to perform under wet conditions. It contains a combination of chemical and physical blockers, which work together to not only provide broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection but also to ensure the sunscreen holds up against water and sweat. The product’s non-greasy finish and lightweight texture are qualities that contribute to a smooth application, too. Just shy of $20, it’s a lovely spray sunscreen that I highly recommend.

SPF count: 30 | Size: 6 ounces | Water-resistant: 80 minutes | Scent: Coconut & Banana

Best Spray Oil: Vacation Orange Gelée Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray

Vacation Orange Gelée Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray
Revolve

Pros:

  • Contains dermatologist-recommended SPF 30 count
  • Spa-grade, non-overpowering scent that instantly transports you to the tropics
  • Cruelty free and vegan

Cons:

  • Contains chemical filters (not mineral), so it may not be everyone’s preference; transparently, it’s not reef-safe

New from Vacation, the Orange Gelée Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray gave me heart-eyes from first spray (corny, I know, yet so accurate). Its spa-grade spray and finish makes it a recent favorite that offers suitable sun protection with a summertime scent that doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin.

It offers a naturally glowy finish and a lightweight, nourishing formula that is arguably compatible with any skin type. Though it’s marketed as an oil, it doesn’t have a greasy finish and instead leaves your skin taut, sun-kissed and gleaming. The brand describes its formulation akin to a “French Riviera shine,” which couldn’t be a more on-the-money analogy.

Its base is coconut oil and the entire formulation is vegan and cruelty free. It doesn’t leave a mess or any residue, either. Just enjoy the luxe experience and reapply on repeat. Plus, it was developed with Elizabeth Hale, MD, the chief medical advisor to the Vacation brand and an SVP of the Skin Cancer Foundation, which adds to the product’s overall credibility and conscious final formulation.

Best with Antioxidant Protection: Supergoop! PLAY Antioxidant Mist with Vitamin C Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen

Supergoop! PLAY Antioxidant Mist with Vitamin C Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen
Sephora

Pros:

  • Exceeds dermatologist-recommended SPF 30 count
  • Provides antioxidant protection, thanks to vitamin C
  • Subtly more hydrating than some other spray sunscreens tested
  • Excellent value for the price as it contains 6 ounces instead of the average of 5 ounces

Cons:

  • Has a somewhat greasy finish, though not a complete dealbreaker; super oily skin types may not benefit from this spray sunscreen

The Supergoop! PLAY Antioxidant Mist with Vitamin C Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen is a unique physical-blocking spray sunscreen because it combines broad-spectrum sun protection with powerful antioxidant benefits. It contains vitamin C, a potent antioxidant known for its skin-brightening and skin-repairing properties. It’s something I appreciate each time I spritz it onto my skin.

What’s more, vitamin C helps neutralize free radicals caused by sun exposure, pollution and environmental stressors, which can accelerate the aging process and contribute to skin discoloration. By infusing this vital nutrient into the formula, Supergoop! provides an added layer of defense against oxidative damage. In a nutshell, your skin not only stays protected from harmful UV rays but also receives a boost in overall skin health and radiance.

Its non-aerosol, non-CFC packaging is eco-conscious, contributing to the reduction of harmful chemicals in the environment. Even though it’s not reef-safe — because it’s not a mineral sunscreen — the brand “makes up” for that with its thoughtful packaging. The beauty is inside, though, and though has a somewhat greasy finish, doesn’t have me dripping once it’s fully applied.

Best for Body Acne: Neutrogena Clear Body Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Non-Greasy Sunscreen Spray

Neutrogena Clear Body Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Non-Greasy Sunscreen Spray
Amazon

Pros:

  • Exceeds dermatologist-recommended SPF 30 count
  • Noncomedogenic and fragrance-free, so it won’t clog pores
  • Ultra-light without a greasy finish

Cons:

  • May not be the most refreshing on the skin for some people, but not a dealbreaker

If you experience body acne or simply sweat more than the average person, the Neutrogena Clear Body Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Non-Greasy Sunscreen Spray is your best bet. One of its key benefits is its oil-free, lightweight formula that provides effective sun protection without clogging my pores or adding excess oil to my skin.

TLDR: body acne often occurs when excess oils and sweat mix with bacteria and dead skin cells, leading to breakouts. This sunscreen spray prevents this by being noncomedogenic (as mentioned, it won’t block pores), so you reap the benefits of sun protection without exacerbating acne.

The spray format is another major advantage when it comes to ease of use, particularly for those who are sweating or on the go. When exercising or exposed to heat, sweating can make sunscreen application messy, but I love how Neutrogena’s spray delivers a fine mist that dries quickly without leaving behind a greasy residue. This fast-absorbing formula also helps to keep my skin feeling fresh and non-sticky, which is especially important for when I’m experiencing the occasional bout of acne on the back of my shoulders.

Best for Dry Skin: Hawaiian Tropic Weightless Hydration Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen Clear Spray

Hawaiian Tropic Weightless Hydration Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen Clear Spray
Amazon

Pros:

  • Contains dermatologist-recommended SPF 30 count
  • Pleasing, subtle scent
  • Has a nourishing, weightless feel, making it perfect for dry skin
  • Excellent value for the price as it contains 6 ounces instead of the average of 5 ounces

Cons:

  • Packaging could be of higher quality, though not a dealbreaker

Aloha, good sunscreen. The Hawaiian Tropic Weightless Hydration Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen Clear Spray is a rockstar for my dry skin, largely in part for its honestly *fabulous* formula that combines sun protection with intense moisture. It’s marketed to offer 12 hours of hydration and, after ample testing, I can confirm this is the case. Of course, you should still be reapplying every 2 hours for complete protection.

Its lightweight, clear spray ensures a smooth application without feeling greasy or heavy. Each time I use it, I love its subtle scent and how it leaves my skin soft and hydrated.

In addition to its hydrating qualities, the Hawaiian Tropic Weightless Hydration Spray is designed for easy, mess-free application. Its spray format allows for quick and even coverage, ensuring that dry skin is evenly protected from the sun’s rays. The formula is also fast-absorbing, leaving the skin with a soft, smooth finish rather than a sticky residue. This is particularly beneficial for those with dry skin, as it helps to lock in moisture without exacerbating dryness or irritation, a common issue with thicker sunscreen formulas.

Made with island botanicals and boasting a refreshing formula at large, this spray sunscreen is simply more elevated in terms of its end finish compared to others I’ve tested. It’s reasonably priced as well and a product my dry skin drinks up each time I’m in the sun.

The below button includes two of the Hawaiian Tropic spray sunscreens.

SPF count: 30 | Size: 6 ounces | Water-resistant: 80 minutes | Scent: Papaya, Mango & Fruit Extracts

Best Vegan: Everyday Humans Good Times Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen Spray

Everyday Humans Good Times Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen Spray
Revolve

Pros:

  • Exceeds dermatologist-recommended SPF 30 count
  • Pleasing, subtle scent
  • Sustainably packaged

Cons:

  • Somewhat difficult to apply evenly as its spray is ultra-lightweight, so be sure to spray with extra care

A lightweight, refreshing formula meets an addicting, subtle scent with the Everyday Humans Good Times Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen Spray. It’ll safeguard your skin a bit more than the industry standard of SPF 30, all with a near-invisible finish. It’s one of the most lightweight spray sunscreens I’ve tested yet.

One of the standout features of this sunscreen spray, hands-down, is its vegan and cruelty-free formulation. The brand is committed to ensuring that no animal-derived ingredients are used, and it refrains from testing on animals, making it an excellent choice for eco-conscious consumers. The ingredients are carefully chosen to be both effective and gentle as well, and my skin always feels nourished after spraying. Ingredients like aloe vera and vitamin E provides additional skin benefits like hydration and antioxidant protection. For less than $20, I feel like I’m using a spa-grade product that never ceases to leave my skin smooth and healthy.

Like the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 70 Spray Sunscreen, this sunscreen is ultra-lightweight, so you’ll want to pay a bit more attention to the applying process. It’s water-resistant up to 80 minutes as well, making it an easy-breezy option for long summer days. Its alluring scent of papaya and honeysuckle is a soft spot for me, too, not gonna lie.

SPF count: 50 | Size: 5.07 ounces | Water-resistant: 80 minutes | Scent: Papaya & Honeysuckle

Best Sweat-Resistant: Neutrogena Beach Defense Water+Sun Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 70 Sunscreen Spray

Neutrogena Beach Defense Water+Sun Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 70 Sunscreen Spray
Amazon

Pros:

  • Exceeds dermatologist-recommended SPF 30 count
  • Boasts a refreshing and quick-absorbing formulation that works well on sweltering days
  • Excellent for outdoor activities
  • Best value, based on this bottle containing 6.5 ounces of sunscreen for less than $10

Cons:

  • Not as lightweight as some others tested

The Neutrogena Beach Defense Water+Sun Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 70 Sunscreen Spray is great for anyone, but specifically for those with oily skin because it won’t clog pores and is noticeably more matte. While most other spray sunscreens on this list are completely void of a sticky texture, this one goes the extra mile.

For oily skin types, one of the most important factors in selecting a sunscreen is finding a product that won’t exacerbate oiliness or cause breakouts. The Neutrogena Beach Defense spray is designed to be oil-free, making it a no-brainer. Its lightweight, fast-drying formula is one that I love turning to on days when the UV is exceptionally high and it’s that sweltering heat (you know what I’m referring to). When basking in the sun’s rays, this spray sunscreen is always packed in my beach bag.

It blends easily into my skin without leaving visible residue or white streaks. Its broad-spectrum SPF 70 provides ample protection from the sun’s harmful rays as well, and it’s an incredible drugstore option that won’t break the bank.

Best for a Natural Glow: Coppertone Broad Spectrum SPF 15 Sunscreen Spray

Coppertone Broad Spectrum SPF 15 Sunscreen Spray
Amazon

Pros:

  • A good alternative to some self-tanners
  • Lightweight, non-greasy finish
  • Won’t make you look orange

Cons:

  • Doesn’t contain dermatologist-recommended SPF 30, so doesn’t provide adequate sun protection as others on this list

The Coppertone Broad Spectrum SPF 15 Sunscreen Spray, though won’t offer the dermatologist-grade level of sun protection at the SPF 30 level, is great for those looking to achieve a natural glow. My advice? Layer this over another spray sunscreen on this list to appropriately protect against UV rays.

It’s excellent for those who despise the feeling of heavy sunscreens. Its lightweight, non-greasy formula absorbs quickly into the skin and, on days when I want more of a JLO glow, I’ll apply it. I can’t help but adore my skin’s natural radiance thereafter.

Unlike tanning creams and oils, this Coppertone spray helps you avoid the heavy or thick feeling that can sometimes interfere with a glowing finish. The result? A subtle, dewy appearance that’s perfect for those who want their sunscreen to enhance their skin’s natural texture, without any white cast or greasy after-feel.

In addition to its easy application, Coppertone Broad Spectrum SPF 15 Sunscreen Spray is also infused with moisturizing properties that support skin hydration. For less than $10, it’s that add-to-cart purchase to grab ahead of summertime.

SPF count: 15 | Size: 5.5 ounces | Water-resistant: 80 minutes | Scent: Unspecified, though no strong fragrance detected

How I tested

Best Spray Sunscreens Review
An assortment of spray sunscreens tested, from Neutrogena to EltaMD. Victoria Giardina

After testing the best spray sunscreens for more than 4 years, I re-assessed each top brand, from Neutrogena and EltaMD to e.l.f. SKIN and Coppertone. However, I began to ask myself, “how can I most accurately test spray sunscreens?”

Enter the UV reader. I know, it seems scientific, but I conducted a mini science experiment at home. While my at-home test won’t measure up to the lab-grade clinical trials performed by professionals, here’s an explanation of my method:

  • First, I got my hands on a UV reader: After much research, the Solarmeter UV Index Meter sold at Chewy offers the same metrics and data points that the meteorologist-esque ones on Amazon offered — and yes, I technically grabbed a product for lizards for the purpose of this sunscreen review. Talk about taking editorial testing up a notch.
  • Then, I went outside to measure the UV index: On the day I initially tested the sunscreens, the UV was 3. This didn’t include the use of any spray sunscreens yet.
  • Next, I sprayed each sunscreen over a plastic bag: I placed a plastic bag over the UV meter and tested each spray sunscreen individually, one plastic bag per sunscreen formula. If the sunscreen adequately blocks UV light, the UV reader reading should decrease to 0. After all, SPF stands for “sun protection factor,” indicating how well it protects against UV rasys.
Best Spray Sunscreens Review
The proof is in the pudding: Each spray sunscreen I tested resulted in top-button protection, or else it wouldn’t make the cut. The UV reading reached 0 for all of them. Victoria Giardina

An FAQ on Spray Sunscreens

Below, our team of board-certified dermatologists answer the golden question — How do I apply spray sunscreen correctly? — along with other FAQs for you to keep in mind as the warm weather rises.

What is a spray sunscreen?

A spray sunscreen is exactly what it sounds like — a sunscreen that comes in an aerosol or pump spray form, allowing for a fine mist application over the skin.

“Instead of rubbing in a thick lotion, you can simply spray it on, making it a convenient option for people who don’t love the feel of traditional sunscreens,” Hannah Kopelman, MD, dermatologist who’s clinically trained in skin cancer and hair loss — as well as an expert who has also rigorously tested spray sunscreens — told The Post. “However, as easy as it seems, there’s a right and wrong way to apply it to ensure you’re getting proper protection.

What are the benefits of using a spray sunscreen?

The biggest benefit of a spray sunscreen is convenience, undoubtedly. “It’s quick, easy to apply, and especially helpful for reaching tricky areas like your back,” Dr. Kopelman said. “It dries faster than a lotion and doesn’t leave your hands feeling sticky, which a lot of people appreciate. For those who reapply sunscreen frequently — like athletes, beachgoers or parents trying to sunscreen a wiggly kid — it’s a game-changer.”

What’s the difference between sunscreen lotions and sprays?

First things first: sunscreen sprays are typically easier to apply than sunscreen lotions. They are less greasy than lotions and can be applied quickly and evenly. However, when you spray sunscreen, some of it inevitably ends up in the air rather than on your skin, which means you have to be extra cautious when applying.

“People also tend not to apply as thick of a layer of spray sunscreen as they would lotions,” Rachel Westbay, MD, board-certified dermatologist who specializes in cosmetic dermatology, told The Post. “In contrast, sunscreen lotions may provide better protection than sunscreen sprays because more product ends up on the actual skin, giving an SPF closer to what is actually listed on the label. And, if you’re sweating, the lotion will stay on your skin better than spray.”

What SPF number is best for spray sunscreens?

“I typically recommend at least an SPF 30 for body sunscreen but with spray sunscreen, I tend to opt for a bit of a higher SPF, like 50 or 60,” Dendy Engleman, MD, board-certified dermatologist who specializes in cosmetic dermatology and advanced skin treatment, shared with The Post. “This is because spray sunscreens tend not to coat the skin as thoroughly or evenly as lotion or solid sunscreens do, especially when people do not apply enough of it (which is very common with spray formulas!)”

Dr. Westbay also recommends aiming for a 50 or 60 SPF level, mainly for the same reasons. “Spray sunscreens don’t coat the skin as thoroughly or evenly as lotion or solid sunscreens do, and this is especially true considering that people tend not to apply enough of it,” she added.

How to properly apply spray sunscreen to ensure maximum coverage, per experts

Ahead, Kopelman details exactly how to apply spray sunscreen to ensure you’re covered and protected.

  1. Shake the can well: This ensures the ingredients are properly mixed.
  2. Hold the can about 6 inches from your skin: If it’s too close, it’ll be too concentrated; too far, and too much product will blow away.
  3. Spray generously, covering the entire surface of the skin until it glistens.
  4. Rub it in: This is crucial—without rubbing, the sunscreen may not distribute evenly, leaving some areas unprotected.
  5. Repeat for a second layer: This ensures even coverage.
  6. For the face, never spray directly: Instead, spray onto your hands first, then apply it manually to avoid inhalation risks.

“SPF mists that are specifically formulated for the face are different from traditional spray sunscreens,” Kopelman added. “These are often lighter and designed for reapplication over makeup, but you should still avoid directly inhaling them.”

To ensure accurate coverage with spray sunscreen, hold the nozzle close to your skin and spray thoroughly, moving slowly around the places that you want to apply the sunscreen. This is an important step.

What’s more, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying sunscreen until the skin glistens. “It is difficult to accurately measure the application of spray sunscreen, but it is a good rule of thumb,” Dr. Miller advised. “To ensure proper applications, spray close to your body. You must rub the spray sunscreen evenly throughout the skin to ensure full coverage, but it is important to not completely rub in (leave a sheen).”

Reapplication should be done every two hours while out in the sun, or immediately after swimming or sweating excessively.

How do spray sunscreens work?

It’s important to note that there’s no difference between the formulation of a spray sunscreen and a lotion. The only real difference is the packaging and therefore the way that the sunscreen is applied: spray sunscreen comes out of a nozzle in a fine mist, whereas lotion sunscreen is applied as regular lotion, per Dr. Engleman.

What’s the difference between a chemical and a mineral spray sunscreen?

“Chemical spray sunscreens contain active ingredients like oxybenzone and avobenzone that absorb UV rays and convert them into heat,” Kopelman explained. “They tend to be lightweight and blend into the skin easily. Mineral spray sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which physically block UV rays by reflecting them away.”

On the flip side, mineral sunscreens are great for sensitive skin, but they can be thicker and may leave a slight white cast. “It really comes down to personal preference, but if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, I’d steer toward a mineral option,” she said.

What ingredients to look for in a spray sunscreen, according to experts

Because spray sunscreens can easily be distributed by the wind when applied outside, Westbay recommends looking for environmentally-friendly, reef-safe formulas that won’t damage the environment.

“Chemical sunscreens have been shown to have some adverse environmental effects,” she said. “Oxybenzone (a common chemical sunscreen ingredient), in particular, has been shown to produce a variety of toxic reactions in coral and fish, ranging from reef bleaching to mortality. The term ‘reef safe’ refers to sunscreens that contain only mineral (aka physical) UV-blocking ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, as opposed to chemical ingredients, like oxybenzone, avobenzone and PABA, which have been connected to bleaching and deterioration of coral reefs.”

Engleman also recommends mineral sunscreens, especially to her patients. “Mineral sunscreens get to work protecting your skin right away, so you can slather it on and go without waiting for it to sink in,” she explains. “Chemical sunscreens are partially absorbed into the bloodstream, and the possible adverse effects of this have not been fully studied, so this is another reason I prefer mineral spray sunscreens.”

It’s also important, per Miller, to aim for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.”Also look for water resistant sunscreen,” she said.

Editor’s note: Benzene is a known carcinogen that was found in some spray sunscreens due to contamination during manufacturing. While not all sprays contain benzene, it’s something to be aware of when choosing a sunscreen.

“Aside from benzene, I also recommend avoiding oxybenzone and unnecessary fragrances, which can irritate the skin,” Kopelman shared.

The forgotten areas: Which spots of the body to make sure you spray

According to Kopelman, so many areas of the body are oftentimes forgotten when applying sunscreen of any time. The tops of the feet, the back of the neck, the ears, the scalp (especially if you have thinning hair) and the backs of the hands are often missed.

“These areas are just as exposed to the sun as the rest of your body, so don’t skip them,” she pinpointed. “If you’re wearing sandals or open shoes, make sure to apply sunscreen to your feet, too; I see so many people with painful sunburns in these spots.”
