The Board of Education is expected to vote tomorrow on a plan by Chancellor Rudy Crew to phase out 13 city schools whose students have failed to meet state standards.
They’re among 97 the State Education Department has designated “schools under registration review” – and told to shape up in three years.
The 13 – some of which have been on the SURR list since 1989 – are to close between end of the month and June 2001.
The closings would allow Crew to open new schools with new principals who would have more flexibility in staffing .
“We think it’s a good idea for the chancellor to get tough with these schools,” State Education Department spokesman Bill Hirshen said.
The schools are:
* Burnside School (PS/MS 330), Bronx.
* Charles Richard Drew Intermediate School (CIS 148) , Bronx.
* Esther Clarke Hunter Middle School (MS 263), Brooklyn.
* St. Mary’s Park School (PS 27), Bronx.
* Elizabeth Barrett Browning Middle School (MS319), Bronx.
* Angelo Patri Middle School (MS 321) , Bronx.
* Diana Sands Intermediate School (CIS 147), Bronx.
* Saw Mill Park School (PS 40), Bronx.
* Raphael Hernandez School (PS 235), Bronx.
* Ruth Whitehead Whaley School, PS 113, Manhattan.
* Sarah J. Hale HS, Brooklyn.
* Sarah Garnett Middle School (MS 324K) , Brooklyn.
* Whitney M. Young Jr. Academy (IS 193X), Bronx.
Meanwhile, Crew yesterday grilled at least one top administrator from a low-performing Bronx district but announced no decision on her future.
He questioned District 12 Superintendent Mary Rivera on “plans she has for the district for the upcoming year,” said Louis Maldonado, president of the local school board.
Crew has said he plans to replace at least five superintendents.
