So, who wants to be a medalist?
TV host Regis Philbin yesterday got a first glimpse of the New York Post Liberty Medal that will be awarded to 10 deserving New Yorkers next week – and wished that all the nominees could win one.
The host of “Live with Regis and Kelly” will emcee the gala reception Thursday, hosted by Mayor Bloomberg at Gracie Mansion, to honor the everyday heroes.
That’s when the names of the 10 winning nominees will be announced, and each will step forward to receive a silver medal designed by famed graphic designer Milton Glaser.
The 31/4-inch-diameter Liberty medal features the Statue of Liberty’s torch, with radiating lines of light coming from behind it.
Philbin recently told The Post he believed “the people who are out there, working so hard for this city, committed to it, dedicated to it, should be honored” – and wished there were more medals to go around.
The prominent New Yorkers on the panel of judges, including NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, TV anchor Rosanna Scotto and movie producer Harvey Weinstein, spent the past two weeks wrestling with the difficult task of selecting winners in 10 categories.
The Post’s readers sent in more than 1,500 nominations in the three months since the paper unveiled its Liberty Medals program to shine a spotlight on the city’s humble heroes.
