The Department of Education czar who oversees food, transportation and sports programs announced he’s stepping down as Schools Chancellor Joel Klein puts the final touches on his sweeping reorganization plan.
Kevin Gill, who until recently also oversaw the department’s computer operations and had one of the largest non-instructional management jobs in the school system, informed Klein he’s retiring after 35 years of service.
“For the past 20 years, I have run the largest school food service program in the United States and for the last 15 years, the largest pupil transportation system,” Gill said.
Klein recently hired Charles Niessner to replace Gill as the new head of information technology.
