If you’re planning to use MTA bridges or tunnels today, be prepared to dig deeper at the tollbooths – the tolls jumped early this morning.
Drivers will have to shell out two bucks – 25 cents more than yesterday – at the Marine Parkway, Henry Hudson and Cross Bay Bridges, while the price at the Triboro, Throgs Neck and Whitestone Bridges – along with the Midtown and Brooklyn Battery Tunnels – will jump by half a buck to $4.
The toll increases – each more than 14 percent – come hard at the heels of the hike in the subway fare to $2.
And fares on the LIRR and Metro-North rose an average of 25 percent, as well.
In a lawsuit brought by the Straphangers Campaign, a judge ordered the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to rescind the hike because the agency used phony figures to justify the increase.
The rollback was halted when the MTA filed a notice of appeal.
State Comptroller Alan Hevesi and city Comptroller Bill Thompson charge the MTA kept two sets of books, hiding more than $500 million in projected surplus funds.
MTA honcho Peter Kalikow has called those accusations “lies, half-truths and innuendoes.”
The Automobile Club of New York used the Straphangers’ tactics in an attempt to halt the toll increase, but on Friday a judge said the hike could go as scheduled.
Another hearing in the case is scheduled for Tuesday.
