A city furniture company has donated 200 new chairs to a Lower East Side public school whose students were getting splinters sitting in 40-year-old wooden chairs.
“The chairs were very deplorable,” said Marianna Lokis, vice president of Long Island City-based Adirondack Direct, which donated navy-blue, lightweight chairs to replace the wooden clunkers.
“I was surprised they were still in use.
“I’m glad we found out about it. We happened to have chairs left over from an order. We were happy to help.”
The Post first reported on the splinter problem at PS 20 last month.
The school’s principal, Leonard Golubchick, was thrilled with the response to his appeal for help.
“We love it. We’re thrilled that someone demonstrated that they care about children and that business cares about children,” Golubchick said.
He add that said the donated chairs from Adirondack will enable him to replace one-quarter of the Kennedy-era seats.
