Yankee slugger Jason Giambi has admitted to injecting steroids and human growth hormone last year, according to federal grand jury minutes.
Giambi, who has repeatedly said he never used performance enhancing drugs, made the admission in December 2003 before the grand jury investigating the Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative, or BALCO, the San Francisco Chronicle reports today.
Giambi told the panel he got the steroids from San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds’ personal trainer, Greg Anderson.
But Giambi did not finger Bonds as a steroid user, noting that Anderson kept mum about his other clients.
“That’s what I mean by saying that he made it so, you know, private, that you know, ‘Hey, don’t say anything, don’t talk about anything,’ ” Giambi told the grand jury, according to transcripts obtained by the Chronicle.
“You know, I assumed because he’s Barry’s trainer – you know, Barry – but he never said one time, ‘This is what Barry’s taking, this is what Barry’s doing.’ He never gave up another name that he was dealing with or doing anything with.”
Bonds has repeatedly denied using steroids or performance enhancing drugs.
Giambi’s younger brother Jeremy, also admitted under oath that he used steroids.
Both were given immunity from prosecution for testifying before the grand jury.
Giambi also said he used “undetectable” steroids called “the clear,” which is a liquid placed onto the tongue and “the cream,” an ointment rubbed into the skin.
Giambi told the panel he got the steroids and syringes from Anderson, but obtained the human growth hormone at a Gold’s Gym in Las Vegas.
