The creative teams behind Warners’ two big superhero franchises — Batman and Superman — are upset about the studio’s plans to rush its long-threatened Justice League of America movie into production before threatened strike by actors next June. Variety reports that while the two heroes are both key members of the JLA team (along with Wonder Woman, The Flash and Aquaman), plans at present are not to cast the two actors currently associated with the roles. Christian Bale, the incumbent Batman, has already spoken out against this, and Christopher Nolan, currently directing him in “The Dark Knight” for release next summer, is said to be none too happy. Ditto for Bryan Singer, who is planning to crank up a followup to “Superman Returns” with Brandon Routh. No word on who will play Superman and Batman in the JLA movie, though Warners could always go with “Smallville” star Tom Welling. Batman is tougher. We doubt Val Kilmer could fit into a bat suit anymore, and somehow doubt that George Clooney is interested. But Michael Keaton seems to have plenty of time on his hands these days.
