The Cult, “Dirty Little Rock Star”
It’s been more than six years since we’ve gotten a new release from the influential English band that mixed hard rock with Goth rock in the ’80s, back when that was a new idea. On the lead single off the band’s ninth album, “Born Into This,” they drop some of their old-school metal sound for indie-rock dance grooves, but – relax – Ian Astbury’s voice hasn’t changed one bit. They’re headlining Hammerstein Ballroom on Nov. 9.
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus,
“Your Guardian Angel”
On its new single, the Florida-based quintet sets aside raging emo-rock for a sweet acoustic ballad about being unfailingly devoted to a true love. The band plays Saturday’s youth volunteer-oriented Boost Mobile RockCorps concert at Radio City with Ludacris, Busta Rhymes and Angels & Airwaves. Visit boostmobilerockcorps.org for details on how to get free tickets.
Emery, “The Party Song”
Behind the lighthearted, optimistic and rocking hooks of the band’s lead single, off its new third album “I’m Only a Man,” lies a cautionary tale about the hazards of self-destructive behavior, inspired by lead singer Toby Morrell’s friends and wife’s personal experiences with making bad choices. The Seattle-based band plays Nokia Theatre on Nov. 26.
Matthew Good, “Born Loser”
When he isn’t blogging or engaging in political activism, this singer from British Columbia makes music. His third solo album (he fronted the platinum-selling Matthew Good Band in the ’90s), “Hospital Music,” a response to an accidental medication overdose following a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, leads off with this deeply personal, stripped-down and melodic single.
We the Kings, “Skyway Avenue”
Taking its name from the middle school the members attended (only about a decade ago), the alt-pop-rock band debuts with a self-titled album featuring this youthfully emotional and catchy lead single. It’s not just a song about being in love, it’s also a love song to the coastal resort town they call home, Bradenton, Fla. – Maxine Shen
