There is a lot not to like about the Mets, right now. But there is probably one issue GM Omar Minaya and his staff should have been more diligent about addressing in the offseason. That was finding a suitable back-up corner outfielder. Let’s not make this a second guess. Let’s imagine the picture that Minaya and his staff were looking at when they assembled this roster: Moises Alou was in left and Ryan Church was in right. Alou is among the most brittle players in the game. You could hope for 400 at-bats, but you also have to recognize that you may get far fewer than that.
