Yankees stud — Mark Teixeira
Lost in the walk-off madness in The Bronx this weekend was that the Yankees wouldn’t have beaten the Twins on Saturday or Sunday without Teixeira.
With Damaso Marte on the disabled list, Coke is the only lefty in the Yankees bullpen, and he needs to find some consistency to stabilize the struggling bullpen. Friday night, Coke came in with the Yankees trailing 3-1 and immediately gave up a home run to Minnesota’s Joe Mauer. Mauer and Justin Morneau, both lefties, tortured the Yankees all week.
Saturday, Coke entered with a 3-2 lead with two outs and runners on second and third in the seventh inning. He did do a nice job getting out of the jam, but gave up the lead the following inning on a Morneau home run then put the Yankees behind on a Brian Buscher double.
There’s a lot of pressure on the 26-year-old, but he has shown the talent to be the lefty stopper the Yankees desperately need in the bullpen with Marte a complete bust so far in pinstripes.
Mets stud — David Wright
Wright had a scorching week for the Mets and, most importantly, some of those hits came in clutch situations.
And Reyes has yet to start (pinch hit on Friday) on the Mets’ road trip because of tendinitis in his right calf. Manuel said that the disabled list is not likely for Reyes, but the manager is surprised the injury has kept him out of the lineup this long.
The Mets’ offense thrived in their first three games without the speedy Reyes (8 runs per game) before getting blanked last night, 2-0, by Matt Cain and the Giants.
