PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Floods caused by Hurricane Tomas forced thousands from their homes and increased the danger of the cholera epidemic in earthquake-hit Haiti, aid workers said yesterday.
But the twister, which weakened to a tropical storm over the Atlantic but has now again strengthened into hurricane, largely spared crowded camps in the Haitian capital housing 1.3 million earthquake survivors.
Six people died, all outside Port-au-Prince, the government said yesterday. About 10,000 people left their homes to escape floodwaters.
Aid workers are worried that a two-week cholera epidemic that has killed more than 440 people could worsen.
The USS Iwo Jima, sent to help with relief operations, was ready to send in engineers and public health workers, US officials said.
