A French businessman claims Uber broke up his marriage — so he’s suing the company for more than $45 million, local media reported.
The unidentified man, who hails from C?te d’Azur in the south of France, says his problems began when he used his wife’s cellphone to log into the app-based taxi company.
A technical glitch allowed his wife to be notified of his travels, including pickup and drop-off points — even after he logged out of the app, he claimed.
His wife accused him of cheating, and ultimately filed for divorce, according to French newspaper Le Figaro.
It’s unclear if there was any infidelity.
A spokesman for Uber would only say that the company “does not publicly comment on individual cases, including the case of divorce proceedings between spouses.”
Apparently, the Uber glitch is not a one-time problem.
Testing done by Le Figaro shows that the bug is also evident on older versions of the app. The newspaper found that the issue was fixed on December 15 in an update.
According to Le Figaro, the app will post details about when Uber was last used by a locked account, but not the geolocation of where the user went.
In the case of the man from C?te d’Azur, his wife continued to receive notifications — saying he was using the Uber app — long after he claimed to have logged his account off her phone.
Frisky Android users need not worry, though — the problem is said to only be limited to iPhones.
Uber has had a bad track record in France in the past.
In December, drivers from the ride-hailing company blockaded French airports in protest of their pay.
Two years ago, a pair of executives was arrested and charged with deceitful commercial practices, operating an illegal taxi service, and illicit storage of personal data.
An initial hearing for the Uber divorce case is expected to take place in March. Experts believe the trial could lead to similar lawsuits.
Social media users were having a field day Thursday — posting their opinions on the matter throughout the day.
“You cheat on your wife, yet Uber is to blame for your divorce?” tweeted Laura Brown. “You’ve Got [sic] to be kidding.”
Another wrote, “No guy, your philandering caused your divorce. Uber should just send a hitman. What a loser!”
