A couple of birdbrains broke into a barn housing chickens confiscated in a massive raid on an upstate cockfighting ring this week and tried to bust the roosters out of the joint — only to find themselves behind bars.
Cops arrested Utica residents Juan Jose Lucca Vega, 41, and Wanda Santos, 42, Tuesday after they allegedly broke padlocks on a barn in Herkimer County — about 80 miles from Albany — and tried to spring 50 from the slammer, according to the state Attorney General’s Office.
The gamecocks were just some of the more than 200 that authorities rescued from the brutal operation Saturday, where sickos from all over the state came to watch cocks with razors on their legs slicing and dicing each other, according to the AG.
Cops also arrested 41 people and seized $68,000, several handguns and 3 ounces of heroin during the raid, dubbed “Operation Bloodsport.”
Authorities charged Vega and Santos with burglary in the third degree and training an animal for animal fighting for amusement, but are still investigating if they were involved in the ring.
