Two significant names were added to the Jets’ injury report Thursday. Leading receiver Quincy Enunwa and top cornerback Trumaine Johnson both suffered injuries during practice and were limited as a result.
Coach Todd Bowles said it was too early to know if either player is in danger of missing Sunday’s game against the Broncos at MetLife Stadium, though Enunwa described his hip problem as “just playing football.” When asked if he thought it could keep him out, he said, “I don’t think so.”
Johnson, bothered by a quad issue, was unavailable for comment. He would be a major loss against a Broncos team that features quality receivers Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. Cornerback Darryl Roberts also suffered a hamstring injury and was limited in practice.
Special teams coordinator Brant Boyer was not pleased with the blocking by his unit during kickoff returns in Sunday’s loss to the Jaguars. Andre Roberts averaged just 13.3 yards on three returns.
“They pinned us in there a couple of times,” Boyer said. “I think we had some chances, but we missed too many damn blocks. … I think that we just need to do a better job of maintaining on our blocks and we’ll get that done and that’s on me.”
The Jets’ special teams unit, a problem area in past seasons, is ranked second by FootballOutsiders.com through four games. But Boyer said it’s too early to make an assessment on the unit.
“We’ve got to maintain [it], and you got keep going up and up and keep doing some things and making a difference,” he said. “You make some plays, you’ve got to have more of an impact, and that’s what I’m trying to preach in that room.”
Broncos star pass-rusher Von Miller (thigh) was limited in practice for the second straight day.
Wide receiver/special teams ace Charone Peake (hamstring) was ruled out for Sunday’s game, while tight end Neal Sterling (concussion) remained out of practice. Safety Marcus Maye (ankle/foot) and center Spencer Long (knee/finger) also were limited.
