Holy shoe!
Since the Air Max 270 dropped is February 2018, the cushiony sneaker has been a hit for Nike. But internet watchdogs are calling its logo “blasphemous and offensive” to Muslims.
A new Change.org petition has popped up, urging the sneaker giant to recall these popular kicks. The issue? The logo, scrawled across the sole, resembles the Arabic word for “Allah,” or god.
The logo’s placement means it “will surely be trampled, kicked and become soiled with mud or even filth,” writes Saiqa Noreen, who started the online action.
Noreen urges the footwear brand to consider how “this is disrespectful and extremely offensive to Muslims and insulting to Islam.”
As of Wednesday afternoon, the petition has over 14,500 signatures. A representative for Nike told Fox News that the company “respects all religions” and that the controversial logo “is intended to reflect the AIR MAX brand only. Any other perceived meaning or representation is unintentional.”
