The exact exchange between Chiefs coach Andy Reid and Travis Kelce may never be fully known, but the star tight end did address it after Kansas City captured its second consecutive Super Bowl title.
Kelce was asked about the tense conversation that caught the attention of football fans everywhere as he was seen yelling at Reid and appeared to bump him during the second quarter of the Chiefs’ 25-22 win at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday.
“I’m gonna keep it between us,” Kelce said during an interview on ESPN’s “NFL Primetime” after the Super Bowl 2024 win.
“I was just telling him how much I love him,” Kelce added.
While the scene seemed out of the ordinary for the Chiefs and angered some of those watching, there didn’t appear to be any animosity between Reid and Kelce after it.
The Athletic reported that Kelce later went up to Reid and hugged him and the Chiefs coach patted him on the back.
“He caught me when I wasn’t looking,” Reid said with a laugh during an interview on ESPN. “He didn’t know I was going to go that far. Then he came over and gave me a hug and said ‘Sorry about that.’ But he just wants to be on the field and he wants to play. There’s nobody I get better than I get him.
“He’s a competitive kid and he loves to play and he makes me feel young, but my balance is terrible.”
While the moment appeared to surprise a few people watching at home, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes felt the interaction was a sign of how much the team cares.
“That moment right there speaks to the team that we are,” Mahomes told Chris Berman and Booger McFarland about the incident. “Everybody loves it. Everybody loves the game, wants to compete and coach Reid wants to compete. If you watch you might get a little bit too.
“That’s just the type of mentality we’ve always had and that’s why we can win games like we won today.”
Kelce’s emotions got the better of him in the second quarter after a Kansas City fumble cost them a chance to score while already trailing.?
