Renovation and Rehabilitation Seminar?
You have a building, you have a mess and you want to fix it. How do you keep the rain out of it? How do you make it energy efficient, not violate the building code and not irritate your contractor and the owner? How do you not destroy the historic significance of the property? How do you deal with brick and masonry cellar foundations from the inside? What are sacrificial mortars and renderings? Should you worry about freeze-thaw damage when you insulate on the interior? How do you insulate on the exterior of a mass wall assembly? Get the answers from a building science guru, professor Joseph Lstiburek, at this all-day seminar. 8 am – 5 pm. $175. The Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, 212-683-0023.

Six to Celebrate: Bicycle Tour of Gowanus
Part of the Historic District Council’s 2011 Six to Celebrate neighborhoods, the Gowanus is a unique area that largely retains its industrial character, with some of?its local businesses dating back more than 75 years. In recent years, plans for the canal have conflicted with the existing character of the neighborhood and some significant industrial structures have been demolished for out-of-scale, out-of-character, speculative development. However, with the canal’s recent designation as a federal Superfund site, there is now an opportunity to successfully advocate for the preservation of the industrial character of the area and retention of significant structures associated with this history. This tour concludes with a presentation by Friends and Residents of Greater Gowanus, which is working on a comprehensive survey of the neighborhood. Bring your own bike. 11 am-1 pm. $10. Meeting location and directions for this tour will be provided upon registration. Register here.
